SWIMMING LESSONS

All classes are based on the American Red Cross' Learn to Swim program. Each course combines skills and instruction in safety and swimming. Students are recommended to proceed level by level to pick up the skills most efficiently. Classes meet Monday-Thursday for two weeks at the Mandan Aquatic Center.

***All descriptions of levels and skills to be learned are explained in detail below. Individuals must have passed the previous level in order to move to the next level. If you are unsure what level your child belongs in, please contact the aquatics specialist at 667-3260.


REGISTRATION AND SESSION DATES
Registration can now be done ONLINE or registration hours are from 7:30am - 6:00pm at the MANDAN PARK DISTRICT OFFICE in the Raging Rivers building. Registrations will NOT be accepted over the phone or by mail. All registrations are on a first come, first serve basis.

FEE: $40.00 per participant

LATE FEE: $10.00 *late registration must be approved by the aquatics specialist.

Level Descriptions

Infant/Toddler - Familiarization to the Water
This program is designed to familiarize young children (from ages 6 months to about 3 years) to the water and prepare them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim courses. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. This class will teach parents techniques to use when working with their child in the water. Parents are required to be in the water with their child for this class.



Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
Children must be 36 inches at the chin to start Level 1. 
Helps participants feel comfortable in the water

Level 1 participants learn to: enter and exit water safely, blow bubbles through mouth & nose, open eyes underwater & retrieve object, front & back floats & glides, recover to verticle position, roll from front to back to front, tread water using arm & hand actions, alternating & simultanious leg action, alternating & simultanious arm action, combined arm & leg actions on front & back.



Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Gives participants success with fundamental skills

Level 2 participants learn to: enter & exit water from the side, fully submerge & hold breath (bobbing), open eyes under water & retrieve object, front, jellyfish & tuck floats, recover to vertical position, roll from front to back to front, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, tread water using arm & leg action, combine arm & leg actions on front & back, finning arm action.



Level 3 - Stroke Development
Build on the skills in Level 2 through guided practice in deeper water

Level 3 participants learn to: Enter water by jumping from side, headfirst entries from the side in seated & kneeling positions, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival & back float, change from vertical to horizontal position on front & back, tread water, flutter, scissor, dolphin & breaststroke kicks on front, front crawl & elementary back stroke.



Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
Develops confidence in the skills learned & improves other aquatic skills

Level 4 participants learn to: Headfirst entries from the side in compact & stride positions, swim underwater, feet first surface dive, survival swimming, front crawl & backstroke open turns, tread water using 2 different kicks, front & brack crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, flutter & dolphine kicks on back.



Level 5 - Stroke Refinement
Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes

Level 5 participants learn to perform the following: Shallow-angle dive from side then glide & begin a front stroke, tuck & pike surface dives, submerging completely, front flip turn & backstroke flip while swimming, front & back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, sculling.
